I think it would be really helpful to have a food journal within our community where we could log everything we eat (accountability matters!), and be able to count calories and/or carbs. Not sure what that would entail, as i am fairly new, but i personally would love it! www.livestrong.com just doesn't have what i need anymore since finding out i'm diabetic. It would be nice to know if i'm close to being "on track" with my carbs, and being able to see in black and white what i've eaten and had to drink would be awesome (without having to use more than one food journal).
I have an undeveloped idea that might help those new to diabetes.
I read the board versus searching for anything, so I may not know how the search feature really works.
My thought is to create an "experiences" section. Instead of the focus being a topic, it would be an interesting or helpful experience or thought regarding that topic. On the main board, we would usually see: "Why are my blood sugars going crazy?" , but in the experience section, it might be "Metformin - How much I needed to get control", "Insulin - the dangers my doctors never told me about", or "Atkins - Monitor blood sugar closely". I'm thinking of small, autobiographical events that may help someone who searches that first key word; I'm picturing a type of library.
When I knew almost nothing except the words and terms my doctor used regarding diabetes, it was overwhelming! All this new information, that sounded so clinical, just blended together. It wasn't until I started hearing other people's experiences that it became understandable. The facts and thoughts from another person's story, describing how is it similar or different to what I was experiencing, how long it took for results, did they think the benefit outweighed the risk, or what were things they would they do differently, all expanded my frame of reference beyond what the doctor said. Let's face it - most doctors don't have personal experience with diabetes, and for legal reasons, couldn't share anything outside of the usual medical response. The ways we tweaked various things to make them work, and when we decided to give up on other ideas, products, meds, etc., are all good for increasing our understanding while we spend time on the main board discussing current issues and situations.
I hope this will help. Best wishes and Happy Holidays!
There are many grandparents out here who love and cherish our grandchildren. It is so difficult for our children with a newly diagnosed type 1 child, to manage all that needs to be done, there doesn't seem time enough to make sure the family unity stays intact. A section like this may be helpful to us to know HOW to help without being in the way, but still maintain the unique relationship of that child and his grandparents.
What if have a new theory for Diabetes that clarify and explain the causes of Diabetes and determine the basic symptoms of the new patients before starting talking any medicine? It also classified Diabetes disease to 6 different type (reasons) that makes patients one of the two famous type (Diabetes 1 and 2)
all what I need to determine the patient case (status) is to have some tests results for him as I can prove that,
I am not claiming that I have a treatment for Diabetes but I am sure that what I have is very useful starting point to can find the cure for Diabetes.
Does that helps?

It ought to be easy to access 'Diabetes Forecast' from main page of ADA, but it is difficult. When I tell friends, family, patients with diabetes about an excellent article in 'Forecast,' few can follow the explanation of 'second tab from left, way down to Our Magazine in second column,' after you've talked about 'Diabetes Forecast.' If you easily took them from main ADA page, they can see all the opportunities there and will read on. If people simply Google 'Forecast,' they and we are missing great opportunities. Also, sometimes they complain that all they can come up with via home page is paid subscription offer, and they are distracted from what I've told them about and they are turned off, if what they wanted was to read the article. Many people, after reading online, then subscribe to hard copy.
I was wondering if the forum could have a 'TODAYS POSTS' then members could have a look at the different posts at a glance or one that said 'YOUR POSTS'. I think these would be helpful as we are are probably all busy and we probably don't have the time to look through all the catergories. I would certainly give that the thumbs up
Best wishes RRB ps Its pouring with rain down in the South of the UK and lots of snow in the North, strange weather lol
After 3 months being diagnosed, I've got excellent control over everything but my budget. "Our" group seems to be monopolized by extreme pricing for items we'd enjoy. Could you provide a once a week list of direct selling vendors who may have sugar free products at affordable prices? Or possibly wholesale lots. Most markets and general stores have limited and higher priced selections. Thank you.
My idea to help improve Diabetes.org is: CORRECT THE LISTED PHONE NUMBER. You currently have my home phone number listed for the Tesoro address in San Antonio. I have called the American Diabetes Association and have been told over the phone that they cannot fix it. They tell me that "I" have to fix it. Since "I" didn't make the web page, I don't know how to fix this. Can someone please advise?
I was diagnosed with Diabetes in September. Therefore, one of my various areas I have used as a research tool is this website. Afterall, who would you think knows more about managing Diabetes than the "American Diabetes Association. Well I am very disappointed! It says on this website that you can drink diet sodas. I have been drinking a diet rootbeer at night with crushed ice to help relieve the desire for that late night munchy. I had noticed that my glucose levels seem to be higher the next morning when this was my alternative. So last night, after dinner, I checked my glucose level in one hour. During the second hour I had a diet rootbeer on ice. When I re-checked,at the next hour interval, my glucose level, low and behold, had increased. So this morning I did some research and found that there have been several studies on consuming Aspartame and diabetes. I was shocked to find that all of these studies say that a diabetic SHOULD NOT consume anything with this sweetner as the result is, what I seen last night, increase your glucose levels. These studies reveal in great detail how Aspartame affects glucose levels, kidney functions, and many other heatlh concerns.
I am very disappointed that within the American Diabese Association I was misled. Because, I believe most diabetics truly rely greatly on the information found on this site is the most correct. I am imploring that you organization please make sure that the information given is, just that, the most correct and up-to-date.
I fully support the ADA. Although I am not personally afflicted with diabetes, I appreciate the efforts to progress towards better treatments and a cure. However, I fully object to the advertisement that brought me here, pitting one disease against another. I find such a marketing tactic vulgar and uncharitable. To suggest or imply as your headline does, that a cure for diabetes is more important than a cure for breast cancer or AIDS (a contagious disease) is beyond distasteful, it is a disgrace, and portrays the ADA as callous and greedy. This impression is furthered by asking for a specific donation, $50, as opposed to whatever one can afford.
Your mission is an important and noble one. Tarnishing it and alienating sympathy with crass commercialized pandering and even tones of judgementalism is a bad idea. A very bad idea.
Under Food & Fitness > What Can I Eat? > Making Healthy Food Choices, one tip says:
"Choose water and calorie-free "diet" drinks instead of regular soda, fruit punch, sweet tea and other sugar-sweetened drinks."
Somethimes water is too plain for my taste at a given time, but I really hate diet drinks, so tea is my go-to option. Tea should be listed in the sentence above, just as it is under Food & Fitness > What Can I Eat? > What Can I Drink?
Well I guess for a female I am bit of a bachelor in the way I prefer to eat. I love food and have a good palette- when other people make it ( no more seconds and thirds for me-) But on my own, I would really just rather throw back a prepackaged 1oz bag of raw nuts, nonfat Greek yogurt, a piece of wheat bread, diet popcorn-
My pre-diabetes diet says 3 meals plus 1-4 snacks, all meals with carbohydrates and protein, and some fruit and vegs of course-- (well I was thrilled I could eat wheat bread or some rice, or some noodles, or some popcorn, or yogurt or low fat cheese or peanut, almond butter- these are things I already eat.But I know I will gain weight with this much food- an for me it is so much work- and after 21/2 days, I feel like too full, that my life is too much about food, making a mess, and eating every 4 hours with a snack here or there.
I did join a cool martial arts gym for May Thai Fitness and have been walking for 30 minutes a few days a week- (yahoo) but since I already eat almost everything I just saw on the Mediterranean diet ! Most of my long hippie life! I only pig out or eat junk in the desperate times a few times ( a month!) and the infrequent times I go out to eat with company or (less frequently) go to a potluck or party--the only err I have is loving "cheese " and I do not eat more than an American usually does-I at less carbs and less food than I should have- and only eat meats or fish on the occasions mentioned above..
Of course I wonder how did I get pre-diabetes, being a mostly veggie for 30+ years and do not like to overeat or get full, prefer bubbly water over any sweet drinks, am back to still generous weight I had been for about 10 years ( just lost 20- because I weaned off a med, I knew was making me blow up) no diet, just back to where I had been. I should also lose the 7% of my body weight off when the only way I ever has lost weight temporarily was pretty much the cabbage soup or just not eating hardly anything.
I'm so not obsessed about food, but now I have to be- eat more, keep time, and feel I should lose it when I probably can't with carbs at each meal- just sayin' I actually gained weight on jenny Craig- and their food is like slippery condensed beef soups to me- uhg- so much work so much money, I did not even go out for a couple of months, because I knew I would "break my diet".
Ok one weakness ( not for everyone as it is allowed in the diets) is I like a drinkypoo every night. Trying to do wine, then moving to red wine, before liked a gin or vod with a lot of ice, a lot of bubbly water. Ok still average or less than a lot of people, OK I admit sometimes double this- not always.
Could this be why I got pre-diabetes- for liking a tiddle--never have been an alkie-and I very rarely like sweets, give me the salt and oil if I am on a desert island.. so how do I stay chubby get pre-diabetes and dangerous cholestoral, when I have been on what I find is generally the right food.
The things different I must do is eat regularily, have food on hand, eat both the carbs and protien, not separately-.eat easily double the amount of food I want to do-and work out- I know it is stupid to complain but how could I be so unhealthy not eating meat butter fast food more than a couple times a month- and now have to somehow succeed in the change- hm, is it really because I did not eat enough and my glucose/insulin I did not engage properly by not eating, it is because I am going through an antisocial couch potato for about 9 months , is it because I have a drink at night, is it just my heredity, which is in my family, my bro, my sis, my grandad, in some ways. Oddly i have very low blood pressure- one good thing i guess.
Ok now that this solo pre-diabletic needs to reverse/improve it so I do not get type 2 d., and must be consistent to thin out the sludge?
After my long story..which you may find overlong or too personal or funny, or may not be accepted cause I am off tangent-
Here is my questions for you
1) I find a lot of info for menu for Diabetes-not Pre Diabetes, are they the same outlines and requierments
2) i welcome any other ideas for stick in your mouth NO PREP low fat protien/carb snacks, and meals> I do know a bunch about healthy eating anyway- and am pleased do much i love is in the diet but maybe you have some ideas for me-
ok pehaps this will be published if so thank you,
Who does not want recipes just suggestions or links with pre-diabetes tiny meals and snacks
Can't cook and doesn't want to
Having trouble eating so much and often
And hoping I can get some connection and hope to try to reverse this condition
I am a podiatrist and believe that diabetes and the feet are a crucial topic to be included in your site. I would like to volunteer my group to answer questions about diabetes and the feet. We see many patients each day that have diabetes and education is the key to prevention of foot complications, which can often be life changing.
Currently, we are involved with the local Tampa chapter with a booth and writing tips for the walk on their website.
Please consider my volunteer offer. Feel free to contact me at my email that was given upon registration. Feel free to look at my website www.theTampaPodiatrist.com
