a "bleep"?

[ Edited ]

I had cut and pasted a poem I found very touching that was written by Henry van **bleep**. I noticed after I hit "post" it changed his last name to "bleep"

It's probable that after after I hit "post" for this message, it will likely "bleep" his last name again???

His "bleeped" last name is the same as the comedian Dick van D--- that was on the TV show with Mary Tyler Moore...I think it's odd that this IS a person's last name, and I cannot post it- though I realize it is also a slang word, too, but sheesh...

very weird!?

Sue,

I notified Matt a few days ago, that the nanny filter was on again. He fixed it, but it looks to be screwed up again. I'll let him know again. Others may have already done so as well.

What surprised me is that just last week, I had trouble writing about American Bandstand's Dick Clark, yet you were able to use that same first name today.  It looks as though our administrator must have made some change in the last few days.

I suppose most forums need to have a list of terms that are just not acceptable,  Then the list may have to be tweaked a bit from one forum to another because a word that might signal trouble one place might be a part of normal conversation on another forum.  It would be awkward, for instance, on this forum, if I could not prick my finger, yet that's a word that might not be allowed on some forums.

About all we can do is let ADAMateo know if we run into a term we think we should be able to use, but can't.

Molly remember the word prick was not allowed at first until Matt did what he did to let the system accept that word.

I do realize there are some words that should be filtered or heck, there would be all kinds of crazy stuff posted! ...I am going to try spelling his last name with spaces, wonder if that will work? Henry van D y k e :smileywink:

Re: a "bleep"?

Yes, as some have mentioned, the process is not me turning any one thing on or off. It involves my checking which words are on a "smut" list and then deleting the ones that become distracting or might actually be used in normal conversation. I actually think it's rather fun, if a bit silly, to see which words get censored and under what context.

I've deleted "dyke" because of the name reference. If anyone uses it as an insult, they'll quickly get a ban anyway. I do think it's funny that a few weeks ago, a famous actor would have been known as "**bleep** van **bleep**" on this forum :smileyhappy:
