On my birthday I did a forty mile road bike ride by my self, I would have done fifty but I was racing the next day. Had some stir fry and movie that night.
Next day did a mountain bike race of 18 miles. First time I raced since the being diagnosed. Normally cyclist pound the carbs, but
I was a bit cautious on that. I had an okay first lap, but really lost the steam on the next two. I had some carbs in form of diluted gatorade and some cliff blocks (little gel like blocks). But really I was just way under fueled for the effort. It felt weird eating the gel blocks after not having anything like that for so long. I forgot to pack the bars I normally eat.
I did finish all three laps, but not great time. But it was a learning process and I was pretty tired from working that week.
I checked my blood right after and it was 144 (after chewing those blocks and drinking gatorade). By the time I got home it was 83 (40 minutes later).
I then went out for a birthday dinner and also had a beer and half a cupcake. Tested 90 when I got home.
Next morning was 99.
So I had a not so normal day of eating, but I think it worked out ok....I think. Still need to figure out the race day fuel.
Oh yeah, it was hot and it was painful doing that last lap, but I'm used to pain. Hell, I stick my self in the finger every morning with this sharp thing that draws blood.![]()

Happy Belated Birthday RedKat !!!
Regarding carbing up.......Lizzy has a great chart for an est of carbs to eat before exercising. You just have to click on her links at the bottom of her posts and it is in her blog.
I don't road bike but I do surf, my numbers run low so I can afford to carb up with a good balance of carbs/protein/fruit/fat..............my usual treat is a peanut butter and banana sandwich.
I also do a 1 1/2 hr kick boxing class.......I usually have something like a 6in sub from Subway......I also take adkins shakes for in between breaks , along with mini snickers and granola bars.
It took me two years to figure out my right balance, one thing that messed me up was as my numbers got better and I lost weight.....everything changed and I had to start experimenting again.
Good Luck...........................Big Red......................Peace

Thanks for the tips..I will eat more next time and print off a copy of that chart to carry with me. I would love to surf, but being on the east coast it's a lot of work to find good waves.
I did see the results and I did better than I thought, 9th place. So I made goal 1 (finishing) and goal 2 (top ten).
