Food (and Drink) Reviews

I really like the new 1.25 liter bottles of Diet Coke.  Not too big; not too small.  And Blue Diamond's Almond Breeze unsweetened regular Almond Milk (1g carbs per half cup).  But not by itself, quite yet.  It's mostly water.  Currently easing into it by mixing it with half cup of unsweetened Silk plain soymilk (2g carbs), for a savings of 1g carb every morning = 30g per month/360g per year.  Will see how it goes.  Somebody was discussing Almond Milk here somewhere.  Also tried Westsoy, but had to throw it out, it tasted so terrible.  Also looked for Silk unsweetened almond milk, but Kroger's only had the regular sweetened almond milk with more carbs.  Anybody know where to find the unsweetened Silk almond milk?

The Blue Mountain Blueberries have now appeared at Kroger's, as well as Fresh Market, where they were great the first time, and just "okay" the second time.  The ones from Kroger are back to being great.  Almost!   Going to be hard restricting them to just 15 (between 1/8 and 1/4 cup -- my current usual amount, with the usual morning fasting bg reading.  However, I try to match my measure to my meter, and allow myself 1/4 cup if bgs are better, and practice restraint with 1/8 cup (it's a cute little measuring cup like a coffee measure, but 10 blueberries don't cover enough of my morning cereal!) when bgs are a little higher).

Whoops!  Finally found the Silk unsweetened almond milk at Kroger's, but it was so truly terrible, I screamed at first taste, and had to throw it out.  Your tastebuds may vary.....  At the same time, I found a refrigerated version of the Blue Diamond Almond Breeze unsweetened regular almond milk.  It was almost as good as the nonrefrigerated version in the cartons.  I can see using both.  It's nice to have options, because not all groceries carry everything.  What do you think?

There was this little leftover container of mandarin oranges that had been sitting on the kitchen counter for since Derby party dinner in May, and I just got tired of looking at it -- even though it didn't expire until 2012.  Didn't want to throw it out, so in thinking what to do with it, I remembered a little container of lettover fat free plain Fage Greek yogurt that had been forgotten in the fridge for a couple of days, which I figured could use perking up a bit.  So I put the oranges in a colander, rinsed the excess juice-water off them, and added them to the yogurt.  Figured it would taste a little strange -- I mean, when you think of yogurt fruit, you think blueberries or peaches, right?  But one little spoonful has me convinced it will be hard to forget about that tasty new mix in the fridge!

Food (and Drink) Reviews

At Trader Joe's yesterday to get some of my favorite fat free cottage cheese, and found a good-looking new kind of veggie tray, with grape tomatoes, baby carrots, snap peas, and jicama.  I love jicama, but it's a pain for me to have to cut up.  (If anyone has any tips on that, please post!)  Also discovered some a new variety of grapes that TJ's has "invented": Thomcord -- a cross between Concord grapes (which have seeds) and Thompson grapes (which are seedless).  These from Trader Joes are a little less plump and juicy than my favorite Concord grapes, but they tasted pretty good (I could taste both flavors!) and no seeds make them better for snacking "on the go".  Also  picked up a little tray of 3 perfect-looking endives -- two green and one red.  Guy at the checkout was ecstatic to see that I'd apparently already taken Dr. Oz's advice from his show that very day about how good endives are for you.  So I let him know that I did not see Oz's show, but that just proves how great minds think alike.  LOL  He mentioned that Trader Joe's has their own brand of Greek yogurt.  Has anyone tried it???

[ Edited ]

Had a funny while getting my Edamame Caviar (it's like a Mediterranean bean salad, which happened to be featured on the Food Network today) at the deli in Kroger's yesterday.  Anyway, I'm standing there waiting on "the whole thing -- all they had" to be dished up into a 2-pound cylindrical plastic container, when a woman standing in line there noticed it, and asked me "How do you eat that?"  Well, I told her I just eat it as is, but my hubby pours Caesar Salad Dressing over it.  Later I was thinking what a Weird Al "Just Eat It" moment it was.....

The Edamame Caviar looks similar to this:

Why would anyone not know how to eat it???

LOL  Don't laugh, but I've never had tamales, although I've heard of them LOL, and am sure I could figure out a way to eat them.  I mean, how hard could it be?  I don't even care if my food is cold or hot, as long as it's edible.  I'd probably just suck the insides out, and hope it's not too spicy... Pass the napkins, please.  However, I would skip the octopus, although wrestling with it might be great exercise!

Re: Food (and Drink) Reviews

Flamous Falafel Chips -- Original -- "The chip for hummus dip", and "A good source for fiber and protein, low sodium, full flavor", trans-fat, gluten and cholesterol- free, with no artificial flavors, colors, preservatives, or hydrogenated oil -- according to the 8 oz. package which caught my eye yesterday at the health food store.  Partly because I believe, as stated on the package, that "Diets low in saturated fat and cholesterol, and high in fiber-containing fruit, vegetable, and grain products may reduce the risk of heart disease".  17g carbs per 10 chips, but I can easily get by with half that.  They're sturdy enough to put the edamame caviar beans on, which would make a super bean snack, or mini pizza, if you add grated cheese.  The ingredient list reads like a "Who's Who" of healthy foods.

Re: Food (and Drink) Reviews

Wandering around in a strange Walmart's today, and while hubby was getting a Subway, I noticed they had a little bag of sliced apples that would make a nice snack at only 9g carbs.  At the same time, I noticed a lovely-looking picture of a vanilla yogurt cup with strawberries and blueberries, and so thought I'd give it a try.  They made it fresh for me.  It was delicious and, as you can imagine, colorful -- with granola, too, for the top.  Really hit the spot after exercise followed by more Walmart "exercise".  Anybody know how many carbs?
