The only way for you to find out how a protein shake will effect you is to have one and then test your blood. That is the only way to know for sure.

Re: protein shakes

I would first look at the amount of carbs and then test to see how it effects your BS.  I drink the Atkins drinks.  I tried the Glucerna but first thing in the morning they would spike my BS.  I don't drink them every day but are great for getting out of the house fast in the mornings I need to.

Re: protein shakes

I think most diets are actually pretty low in protein.  At times I have used protein shakes for daily protein supplementation and I still use them before and after my workouts.  I buy large 6lb bags of 100% whey protein at costco and usually mix them with 1 cup of milk (12g carbs).  The protein powders that I get are very low carb, typically having 2-5 g of carbs for a serving that has 25 g of protein.

Thank you everyone, basically I just wanted to make sure it didn't interfere with meds.

What meds are you taking that you think it might interfere with?

Re: protien shakes

I have protein shakes which are much lower in carbs and taste better than pre-packaged ones (these are also very expensive).

Go to any supermarket or organic store and look for their lowest carb protein powder.  Usually you can get it in vanilla or chocolate (I have both).

You can make the shakes with water - add a little real cream to make it richer - or use a low-carb milk like Hood Calorie Countdown 2% with 3g carbs for 8oz plain and 5g for chocolate milk.

I can make a 16oz mocha shake for a total of 13g carbs - makes a great on-the-go lunch.

Cheers,

xena

No, a protein shake wouldn't interfere with Metformin.  What you should consider is the amount of carbs they have and how the carb amount affects your numbers when you are evaluating if a particular one is "good for diabetics".
