When do you take your afternoon/evening dose of Metformin?

I was diagnosed with non insulin dependent type 2 diabetes a couple of years ago so my doctor may have told me this but I just don't remember. I had been taking my evening dose of Metformin at bedtime with all my other medication but I was recently in the hospital for a week and they told me I should take it about a half hour before the evening meal.  I admit that does make sense, more so than taking it before bed.  I was just wondering what others did.

Thanks

Pam

The metformin will be just as effective whether you take it afternoon or bedtime.

Taking it at mealtime, with your supper, will help reduce chances of gastrointestinal distress, like gas, nausea, or diarrhea, so it makes the most sense to take it then, unless you normally have a substantial bedtime snack.

Re: When do you take your afternoon/evening dose of Metformin?

The drug builds up to an effective dose in your blood so you have options when you take it.     If you have gastro side effects taking it with a meal often helps calm side effect down.   Taking it with a meal has no impact on how it works.

I take mine with breakfast and at bedtime.

I take mine in the AM, around breakfast and again at 6PM, around supper. I was told to do this simply because of the gastric problems it causes. My doctor told me that if I didn't have "Gastro disastro" problems, to take it whenever I wanted, both at once or one at a time. I don't believe it makes any difference in its effectiveness.

I take mine after breakfast and after dinner.  No particular purpose, just easy to remember.  It makes no difference when taken since it needs to build up in your system.

Re: When do you take your afternoon/evening dose of Metformin?

Metformin doesn't make me ill anymore - I guess I've gotten used to it - so I take it at night along with my other medicines (my probiotics, vitamin, birth control, etc.) simply for convenience.  It's usually an hour or two before bedtime, but before I take my Levemir (the shot is the very last thing I do at night).  I'll take it in the morning just before I eat, but after I test my morning levels.

Diagnosed Type-II on September 11, 2012. Sort of an irony in that, really.

Metformin 1000mg 2x/day, Levemir FlexPen 35uu 1x/day
No longer using Novolog Sliding Scale, increased Metformin, Lantus to Levemir 10/12/12

Re: When do you take your afternoon/evening dose of Metformin?

I don't have any gastro effects from the Met.  I take it with breakfast and at bedtime with my other bedtime meds.  At the beginning, I was struggling with high morning numbers and was taking the Met with supper.  A diabetic friend suggested I take it at bedtime instead of supper to help the morning numbers.  I don't know if it was coincidence, but that seemed to work for me - have had better morning numbers ever since.  Seems like kind of a strong coincidence that that was the only change I made and my morning problems were solved, so I'm convinced.
