Exercise Challenge

Today I went out and got some more trail work in, this time with the East Bay Trail Dawgs, working on a new section of the Bay Area Ridge Trail that we started last November that is expected to be opened in June.

We met at 9 and worked until after 2 cutting new trail that traverses the side of a hill, so it involved cutting deep on the up hill side so that there would be a level bench for the trail.  We used Pulaskis
and McLeods
both fire fighting tools, apparently named after a Polish and an Irish guy, respectively, and for the fits time I used an adzeas well--kind of a cool tool.

Didn't test my blood sugar, but I had a banana shortly after hiking up the hill to get to where we worked, then a bag of Pop Chips after a while and then a turkey sandwich at noon....Although I took lots of short breaks, I never felt like I might be going low...

By the time we finished at 2 p.m., the 9 of us there had built 200 feet of brand new 4 foot wide trail...the soil was really nice to work with and the temperature around 60, so a great day for this kind of work...

Exercise Challenge

Those are cool tools, Morris!  I think I needed something like that, today, when I planted a cedar tree, but had to go with a bulb planter, instead.  Luckily, the tree was only a foot and a half tall, but firmly rooted with its tap root next to the brick garage wall.  So the hardest part was pulling it out -- rocking back and forth with it.  Hubby was standing there saying "Don't hurt yourself" LOL when he saw the difficulty I was having, but we don't get free evergreen trees around here very often, so I leaned against the wall so I wouldn't fall back on my but, and tried again.  We found the perfect place to plant it, but when we couldn't get the hard-packed dirt out of the bulb planter, hubby did finally help by suggesting I go get some potting soil out of the trunk of my car.  LOL  So now, the new baby tree is propped-up with some large pine nuggets in a bare spot at the corner of the house, and I'm hoping for the best.  Must remember to thank the
(or whichever one of these birds) who planted the seed.

Exercise Challenge

Congratulations Nancy getting the tree planted.  Sounded like it was a really big job.  Good work.

I'm reporting in for this week.  I am very happy to report I didn't miss a day this week even on Saturday when I didn't want to walk.  I asked my wife to walk with me and she agreed.  We walked just one mile in 19 minutes.  Something is better than nothing I guess.

I took my Trek 1000 into Eastern Panhandle Bicycles.  Their estimate was $235.00 to refurbish the bike.  It sounded a little high to me, but then again things aren't as cheap as they were when I rode 15 years ago.  Once I get it back I want to ride about two days a week on my weekends if it doesn't rain.  I used to really enjoy riding back then.  I hope that enjoyment comes back to me.

Thanks Morris for posting your trail adventures.  I always enjoy reading them.

Nancy, I hope that your cold, flu or whatever has you is pretty much cleared up by now.  Get well soon.  Talk to you all soon. Take care.

Okay Talvie....you are really making me jealous with your 10,000 plus steps....I have to get that darn pedometer in my shoe....that is going to be my priority today.

How is your weather...did you get any of the high winds ????Any rain( that's the wet stuff that falls from the sky ...teeeeheee) Have fun getting your tree. You are truly an inspiration with all of your steps.....Show off....LOL Have a great day....See ya...Big Red......Peace

LOL! Only managed 9,000 steps yesterday -- took the first tree on the lot almost. ;-) Hey...it was a nice tree! Then we went out -- which we almost never do -- to play trivia at a pub in Phoenix. It was great, but not a lot of walking involved. The weather has been amazing! Cold at night, just right (for me, anyway) during the day. The wind the other night was as bad as the last hurricane I went through! (a Cat 1 in Houston) Blew down trees and took down some building fronts on some new construction in the neighborhood. Wow...

Exercise Challenge

Thanks, Mike!  I'm getting there, but not quite as speedy as your fast 19 minute-mile, yet.  That's really good walking.  It rained all day yesterday, so didn't get to walk Dawg, but Sunday we had a little walk around the school. I did 25 minutes on elliptical yesterday morning, and 25 on the treadmill last night.  Heart rate was just hanging around in the seventies when I first got on the elliptical -- even when I turned the level up to #2, but when I played Reba's
that I taped on the ACM Awards, that got it right up to 100-107 -- and kept it there.  Good luck with your bike.  Hope you can get started getting back to riding this weekend.

Exercise Challenge

Hi All,
Thursdays exercise was just getting in my evening walk.I missed my water aerobics class yesterday. My teacher is on vacation, and her sub teacher is just to slow paced for me,so I don't feel I get a good workout in.I'm hoping the rain misses us today,so I can get out and do my walking, plus finish up my Christmas shopping.Have a great weekend everyone!

Big Red: I watched the Tai Bo tape last night. The tape just showed how to do the various moves.Looks like a good workout, for arms, legs and abs.Does he have a beginner tape out?Sorry to hear the Zumba class was so crowded.I don't like crowds either, especially when it comes to doing exercise. The wild flowers should take hold if you scatter them.I have tulips starting to come up.Strange, as these bulbs are a spring flower.

Exercise Challenge

Nancy,

I walked with a new partner today.  She worked my butt off.  We did my 1.3 mile course in 22 minutes.  When I walk myself I do it in about 23 to 24 minutes.  I'm thrilled to be pushed by someone.  She's also 61 years old tomorrow.  I asked her if she would walk with me until she leaves my section later this month.  To bad she's not staying.  We could have been great walking buddies.

Exercise Challenge

Woke up with a sore right ankle this morning and a slighly bruised heel after hiking 9.5 miles with 1500 feet of elevation gain yesterday in Redwood Park with our gourp of 29, but by afternoon the leg feels a whole lot better. The last 2 miles was on the French trail, which is all redwoods, and very pretty, but very much up and down, with at least 3 steep climbs during which I lagged the group some.

But we had a number of great conversations about the politics of health care that started with my recount of our discussion here over the weekend...

Morris.....glad the ankle is better, nice work on the hike......I'm envious.
Maybe we should start up the " Walking to Morris's house " again. Might be a great motivation to get rid of the winter/spring blues.

Exercise Challenge

Some people find, because it doesn't involve impact, swimming can allow them to exercise without injury issues such as knees. It also seems to involve more muscles in the exercise and may be more effective. Maybe something more intensive such as swimming that doesn't hurt your knees would allow you even better results in less time with less consequences after? Assuming you have access to a pool that is. In our new rural area I've been unable to find one.
