I'm into my 4th month of being a diabetic, and I'm just now finding a balance between exercise and food intake.
I'm finally getting a routine down so that I don't have to think about exercise constantly.
I walk with my dog early morning after breakfast, which I've done for many years, for about 30 to 40 minutes a day, five times a week.
Then in the evening I get on my stationary bike for 13 minutes and then do strength training with a resistence rower while watching TV. 13 minutes on my bike gets the best results than 10, 15, or 20 minutes. I did my math! LOL
By now, I'm pretty aware of what and how much to eat. So I've cut-out "just in case" walks/biking before testing. Now I'll only get on my bike for 13 minutes after testing only if it's too high (over 140, which is a non-diabetic number) or I suspect that high number because of a treat or extra carb that I ate.
I feel grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrreat!!!!

Hello All,
Reporting in for the week. I did five days this week. I ended the week with a hike in Gambrill State Park. Henry said we did about 2.25 miles. By my watch we were out 74 minutes with 11 minutes of breaks. We didn't do one specific trail, but did make it a loop and ended up back at the parking lot. I climbed my first big hill, but Kathy said this hill is small compared to ones with 1500 to 2000 feet of elevation gain. I have no idea how much elevation gain we had. I was huffing and puffing to get up the hill. I have a hike that I've signed up for on the 21st of April. It will be a challenge because I already know it's going to be 1500 feet of elevation gain. I'm hoping it's not all at once. I really had a great time tonight. Thank you Morris for setting the pace and inspiring me to get out and walk too. I'm going back next week as they are making it a weekly hike, but after that I'll have to pick and choose when I go. It cost me $15.00 in gas to go over to the park. My budget won't allow me to do that every week. I understand they come up my way from time to time to hike places like Maryland Heights. I look forward to when they do that one again. I'm glad there are more posting to this thread. Good to read all their activities and how they are doing with their programs. Take care all.

RE the cost of gas, Mike, someties you can arrange to car-pool with others to a hike. Even if that means driving part-way, it can save on those gas costs...

Had a stress test and got a thumbs up on the EKG. Walked the dogs and worked in the garden. All the pots are filled with flowers and looking "purty." Makes me want to drink wine on the patio.
Weather permitting we'll go on a nice walk tomorrow. If not, maybe I'll meet Maya and do some time with Wii's Fitness Coach.

Morris, I watched the video yesterday and did not have time to comment on it. (I have added a high five to Kathy's"
It is a wonderful video on many levels, adventure, exercise, parenting and perseverence just to mention a few.
I think it should be on our inspritation thread.

Started with metformin and a low dose of an ARB for blood pressure. Added a sulfonylurea (a med that helps my pancreas produce my own insulin) Also a low dose of Crestor to lower my cholesterol.
After 7 years I could no longer tolerate metformin so am doing my best to keep control with a max dose of the sulfonylurea and lots of walking, some swimming.

Hadn't exercised since Friday so I made myself do something today. It is a nice day so I decided to do some long overdue yard work. Who knew picking up sticks on over 4 acres could be so exhausting???? My BG must have dropped too quickly because it wasn't long before I was feeling shaky and weak. BG was 103 so I just worked through it. Trying to train the body to be a little tougher and not freak out when the number isn't technically low. Back to Zumba tomorrow!
BG at Diagnosis - 386
A1c at Diagnosis - 11.5
Now that I know all that I know, those are some scary numbers.
A1c 05/14/12 - 6.3
A1c 08/30/12 - 5.9

Well toda.y was going to be a lazzy day, but wasn't. Got up and did a morning walk of about a mile, and was planning just another walk later. About 10:30 AM checked my BG and it was 107! Got my keys and headed for the gym....rode the bike for 30 minutes and ten miles....checked BG when I got home and it was 74...much better. My son was trying to mow the yard and the mower was acting up, so I jumped in and mowed the back yard...no it is not a rider....you must push. Needless to say I am exhausted right now, and my BG PP is at 71.

We have so many sticks in our yard, it seems like they've been multiplying! They are small, medium, and large. So far, I've finished with the large ones, have made a start on the mediums, and am just going to pretend the smalls are mulchy fertilizer. LOL Trying to step up my exercise, and get back to doing as much as I did 10 years ago. It's going to take a while, because it looks like I'm slower. I did a 19-minute 3/4 mile, instead of my old 19-minute mile. Gonna have to try to pick up some speed, if I'm going to get 3 to 4 miles in every day like I used to. Forgot to pick up the baby kettlebell. It's so small, I've been overlooking it. Must put in a more prominent place. Maybe on the coffee table with the dumbbells, if SofaDawg doesn't mind it blocking her view of Animal Planet. Which Zumba are you doing? I'm about ready to start another DVD workout.
