Coconut Oil

Hello Everyone,  Just wondering if anyone has any ideas about coconut oil helping people with T2 Diabetes??  My brother sent me a link to a website about using coconut oil for people with Alzheimers, my Mom has it. Upon further reading I came across links to the use of CO for people with T2 and hypothyroidism, I have both.  Any ideas??  Has anyone tried it??  Thanks, Lisa

Thank you
Lisa

Re: Coconut Oil

I have not tried coconut oil.  As far as I know, the only scientific studies that have been done so far are in mice.  Those studies indicate that coconut oil may help diabetic mice.  Coconut oil is a saturated fat, so it could have adverse affects for heart attack / stroke.

I think coconut oil is recommended by Dr.Oz.  Whether that is a plus or a minus depends on your opinion of Dr. Oz.

Re: Coconut Oil

Here is an interesting article I found at Livestrong.  I love coconut and eat it frequently, though it has carbs, it does not seem to spike me.  http://www.livestrong.com/article/483889-is-virgin-coconut-oil-good-for-diabetics/

Re: Coconut Oil

Farida, thank you for the link to the article. I had not read that one. I have read others that stated that coconut oil is low on the glycemic index. I figure I will give it a try and if it bumps up my numbers then I will know that it is not for me!!  Thanks again.

Lisa, I can only speak for myself but the glycemic index does not work for me.  I go by what I like eating and then test and make the needed tweaks to keep my BG in tight control.  The oil should not raise your BG, if that is what you are concerned about.
