If you're takijng control of your diabetes and watching your carbs, you probably don't want to buy ANY store-bought yogurt. I am limited to 30 grams of cabs/day. 6 grams for breakfast, 12 for lunch, and 12 for dinner. My proteins are 4, 5, and 6 with those meals. I make my own yogurt with soy milk from Trader Joe's. Get the organic unsweetened for about $1.60/qt. It has 4g of carbs and two g of fiber...for a total of 2g/cup. Try to find that in a store!!!! I usually make two or three quarts at a time. Get a pack of Activia yogurt and some Splenda. Add the soy milk to a saucepan, add two tablespoons of the Activia, add a cup of Splenda, stir, and put it in the oven and try to keep it at about 110 degrees. I turn on my oven to 150 and then put the pan in and turn it off. Let it set for 5 or 6 hours, and you should have yogurt. If you have a lot of whey on top, you let it get too hot. If you want it to be creamier, add some powdered milk (but then your carb count goes up). We live on a boat part time, and I found that putting the saucepan in the sun until it gets warm and then covering it with a bucket will produce the same results. Your method and recipe is your decision. I add blueberries and nuts to mine with about one tbsp of cereal....doesn't sound like much, but it works for me. Time is one of the hardest things about diabetes....having the time to prepare meals and take control....but this doesn't take much effort and the results are amazing. Take the challenge and let me know how you do.

First of all, I'm absolutely taking control of my diabetes (have been for 45 years now), count carbs religiously -- and have no interest in making homemade yogurt. Not putting down anyone who does, but for me, there are plenty of great and healthy choices at my local Whole Foods (or any other market for that matter) and I don't want to spend more time in my kitchen than I do now. Especially with spring weather here!
Activia, by the way -- IS store-bought yogurt....and if you're really concerned about the health and quality of your recipe, you might consider a switch from Splenda to Stevia.

sorry but this kinda touches a nerve with me considering..... whom determines what or how much carbs one should have.....i would offer that i eat a higher than normal diet of everything especially carbs....why carbs because i love them that make my life enjoyable i whole pizza is about 200 carbs, no sweat....bowl of ice cream, breads, pastas i just had lasagana and chicken parm with a loaf of soudough bread last night from this great local itailian place i can only imagine the carbs i had, luckily i had a few hours post meal to test my self and add insulin accordingly......my a1c's are consistently below 6.4......
soo it looks like not only am i "taking care of my diabetes" i am enjoying the life that i inject insulin to live for.........what the hell is the point of testing and injecting and testing and injecting and blood work etc etc... if your not going to enjoy being alive then your not taking care of your diabetes at least in my opionon....
but of course if this is your enjoyment it is your enjoyment but to say if one was that implies all and that isn't what floats my boat..... now banana splits, those float my boat.....it's a good thing insulin is sooo cheap in canada at least relatively as compared domestcially

Exactly! Also, for T1 diabetics, whilst reducing carbs (and chosing healthy carbs) does help with overall control, there's nothing that says that a T1 can't eat a sensible amount of carbs and still be in control of their diabetes.

My guess is that you are a Type 2; and / or a heavy-duty Bernstein follower. Type 1's NEED more carb grams daily, than do Type 2's. Type 1's are also NOT restricted on foods. We go by how any food affects our system, and place our own restrictions as to what we can or cannot eat.
BTW, we DO take control of our Type 1 DM. We own it. If we want to live, it is something that we MUST do.

Thank you for your response. I have also been a type 1 diabetic for 40 years. I have had laser eye surgeries, kidney problems, neuropathy, seizures because of low blood sugars, etc......so I also know a little bit about diabetes. The diet I am on serves me as do the 5 shots I take each day because they provide me with the best control for me. I am not advocating that everyone do this....only that this works for me. I use the two tablespoons of "store bought" Activia to get the live sulture. I didn't think anyone would take offense to that....it spreads <11 grams over three quarts. This is information for those who wouldn't mind taking the time to learn something new and maybe enjoy their own recipes. If you're happy with buying yogurt and don't have the time or interest in making some, then this wouldn't apply to you. I would like to hear from those who try it and are willing to learn something new.

I have no idea as to whom you are responding, but....thank you for your explanation.
It would be MOST helpful, to put within your signature, or within each post that you do, that you are Type 1. Thanks.
BTW, insulting others -was not the best way to get started in this community.

Thank you Trisha. This is the first time I have posted here, so I have learned something new today....makes every day worth living. I was responding to the person who had issue with my using two tbs of live culture in my yogurt. It is hard for us to take the time to shop and prepare foods, and this yogurt is so simple to make, I just thought that others might be interested if they had never done it before or weren't aware of the option other than store-bought. As you say, this is something we all live with every day and we all make choices as to how we do it. I'm glad that there is a forum for questions and answers from a community that includes so many people and their own experiences. There isn't a golden bb answer for all problems, so it is nice to hear options. Thank you. Brad

Brad,
Each and every day, we all learn something. That doesn't mean that we agree with it, just that we learn. Even from very controversial posts and threads, we learn.
There may be some, that will like your idea. For them, it could be just what they want or need, but didn't know it, till they saw your post.
Personally, for me, I'm tired of cooking after all of these years. My hubby does 80% of the cooking. He loves yogurt, but I won't touch it with a 20 foot pole.
Welcome to the group, and don't forget to do your signature.

I noticed the same thing and have switched to another yogurt. I also noticed on some flavors that they used artificial colors and flavors. If I can't pronounce it and don't know what it is, I don't eat it.
